A Growing Industry

There is no better time than now to begin your career in automotive retailing. In 2004, the average dealership employed 52 persons and had an annual payroll of more than $2 million. This represents almost 13 percent of the nation's total retail trade payroll at a total of $50.5 billion for all dealerships. Added to this, total dealership employment has increased by 8 percent over the past five years and is now at 1,129,600 people. Franchised dealership employees earn an average of $859 per week (national weekly average).

Auto retailing has been identified as a high-growth industry offering high wages and a bright future for those who choose this career path. ART was the recipient of a grant to educate the public on the many available career opportunities and benefits and build a ready workforce for America's franchise auto dealerships. These careers also are featured on DOL's website www.careervoyages.gov.

Career Voyages is the result of a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education and is designed to provide information on high growth, high demand occupations as well as the skills and education needed to attain them.
